This depends on what you mean by "education". If you're referring to the transmission of accumulated knowledge, then there's more than enough. There is a lack of ACCESS to education, though, throughout much of the world. And no amount of education keeps people from being "evil, stupid, ignorant . . . "; Calvin Coolidge once referred to the world being full of educated derelicts. It's a choice you make, and all education is interpreted through someone's eyes to serve a particularly agenda. The best education provides you with the tools to make decisions yourself, which many people are not given. So in that aspect, education is sorely lacking. Why? The more obvious a society's agenda above and beyond perpetuating itself is, the more one's lack of education becomes acceptable and even welcomed. How can we shape the mind and in turn control the body?
Re: George Orwell's novel "1984" -- it's not quite my source, but it's a logical example of how a society can generate ignorance among its own members yet perpetuate it as brilliance.

Because it's much easier to influence stupid people. Once people get educated, they start asking to many questions and fight back for what's right! But unfortunately "right" is not profitable. If everybody in the world was educated there probably wouldn't be no Republicans, Mexico would have a fair government, there would be no Al-Qeida, Cuba would be Democratic, etc. You get the picture? What side do you want to be on? I suggest you get educated and start asking questions. Or you can be like the rest and believe that if you suffer in this life, it's OK, the next will be better. P.S. How many of our troops do you think hold college degrees?

It seems that there is no lack of education only an abundance of ignorance as long as one group or another seeks to propagate their ideology by teaching it to the young and impressionable they are legitimizing (or trying to legitimize) their agenda or beliefs so I think the TRUTH is the only thing that should be taught to our young ones despite the damage it may do to any-ones agenda. The problem is not the education it is the agenda behind the educating body that hurts all of us.

I am in total agreement with you! I think a big part of it is our crazy global culture. No one takes responsibility for anything anymore. It's always someone else's fault or some psychosis blamed on a bad childhood, or even a new mental illness that just happens to conveniently remove responsibility. Unfortunately ignorance is bliss, and in order to remain blissfully ignorant people choose to be lead like sheep instead of thinking for themselves. Of course then they can push responsibility for their misfortunes off on whoever is leading, be it a pastor, politican, or just "the crowd."
Maybe we just make life too easy in our civilized jungles. In the real jungle, the lions would eat the stupid people and they wouldn't be able to reproduce and overwhelm the natural balance of things...maybe

In the stream.-- Mighty waters draw much stone and rubble along with them; mighty spirits many stupid and bewildered heads.

Politicians prefer uneducated peasants.
Those educated types have always been the trouble makers and make for unpredictable constituents.
