In 2003 I bought a 1997 Blazer 4x4 LS for 9K and had 53000 miles on it.I have put $5000.00 in repairs including
steering column work, rebuilt transmission at 95000 miles,
Leaking manifold gasket.Next summer I will have to replace
the A/C compressor and thats another $800.00.
The SUV now has 103000 miles on it.
I like SUVs,Is a Chevrolet Trailblazer any good?
I have also been thinking of a Toyota 4-runner but
what will I get for 10 grand on a used 4-runner? Not
much probably.

My mother owned one and it was crap if you ask me. It would go through a set of brakes in only 10,000 miles.
Plus it had other problems. Yes I think they suck!

There is no correct answer to be given without looking at the Blazer. The throttle position sensor could be bad but any sensor could be bad. Oxygen sensors or an ignition pickup coil might also cause this. Take it to a Chevy dealer or a shop that specializes in emissions or tune up. Have them conect it to a machine that reads engine trouble codes. Some parts stores may let you borrow or rent a hand held scaner. Getting it fixed will save you money with better gas mileage. Some of the parts replaced are part of normal maintenance but the egr valve reduces smog and engine ping at higher RPM by routing exhaust gas back into the intake. The main way it could effect driving is if there was a vacuum leak. Reset the ECM codes by removing the fuse.

Not a lemon in the strict (legal) sense but they do have a larger than normal number of frequent problem areas.

I work in the auto repair industry too and one thing I can say is that you've never seen sales people light up like they do when a Blazer rolls in. Just about every Blazer we see will have one or more of the following issues (more or less in order);

Ball Joints (that's the big one with this truck - seen em totally fail as early as 40k miles)
Idler Arm
Pitman Arm
Front Wheel Hub/Bearings
EGR Valve (can usually be cleaned, use Dorman gasket with mesh screen)
Oil Cooler Send and Return Lines
Multi-function switch
Fuel Pump
Intake Plenum (its not the gasket, its the plastic plenum that leaks)
Etc, etc, etc....

The Blazer ranks only behind the Ford Explorer as a vehicle I would never own.

Sorry

I had a 1994 Chevy blazer S10 4x4 my aunt got it when it was only 1 year old and then she sold it to me back in 1999 and i had to replace the starter every year and it when tho brake like crazy
so i tho the brakes sty needed to be rebuild so i put every thing i could of tho of into the brakes that was like 800 then the head gasket blow so i replaced that then the water pump gave out so i replace that then the 4x4 stoped working so i drive it with out it
then the fuel tank rusted out so i had to replace that then like 3 weeks later then the fuel pump gave out so i replace that then the timeing belt needed replaced then the power locks started locking and unlocking by thier self so i went the the Chevy dealer and had them fix it that was 450 out the door then i put in a C.D player in to make it a nice in the truck with 2 12 by kenwood and a 1000 wat Amp then the heater core gave out had to replace that
then at 280.000 miles the motor just gave out and need to be rebuild the rings and pistion the cam and the crank all needed replaced thats when i just sold it to the junk yard

They are junk. First after about 60,000 miles the ball joints will need replaced and the intake is almost guaranteed to start leaking. Stay away from blazers. new Trailblazers are alright havent seen many problems with them.

I agree they a light duty. And cheap made. Radiator on mine is always busting tanks because of rough roads I travel. Use Ford 3/4 ton most of the time because of it. Well that and Ford gets better gas mileage as well even with bigger engine than Blazer.
