Sometimes it is a combination of the two. Here in Chicago you are either a Sox fan (and hate the Cubs) or a Cubs fan (and hate the Sox...and the Cardinals). Then there is your basic Bears-Packers love/hate fest. :)

It could be one or the other or both.
I am a huge University of Michigan football fan, up until about 5 - 6 years ago I liked Ohio State.
Then, I read in the paper that when UM played at OSU in 2000, a former UM player, his parents and girlfriend attended the game (which UM lost) after the game they were confronted by several OSU fans (they didn't know he was a UM player) and assaulted, verbally abused and berated.....FANS , who just wanted to see the game.
Then in'04 when UM went to OSU the whole team (players, coaches, training and administrative staff) were subjected to a complete search of their equipment and bags before they were allowed to enter the stadium before the game....NO OTHER visiting team to OSU before (or since) was subjected to those kinds of dirty, underhanded, childish and inexcusable actions.
I have been to at least 2 dozen Michigan football games (home and away) including 2 OSU games (1 win each) after the UM wins the actions and general attitude of UM fans was exemplary, some singing of fight songs, cherring and basic joy that our team won. None of the taunting, jeering and awful remarks that I have witnessed by fans of the home/visiting (other) team.
I myself was confronted by OSU fans at Ann Arbor in 2001 (OSU 26 - UM 20) I can't imagine how they would be in Columbus... and by Northwestern fans in Evanston in 2000 (NU 54 - UM 51) after the game, for nothing else than UM lost and I was wearing a Michigan hat.
Simply put, it's those kinds of things that make me hate Ohio State.
To have some controversy and animosity between the two biggest rivals in all of college football is good, it's healthy, but to be ridiculous and petty is no way to conduct yourselves, as a member of the team, staff or a fan.
But, I am very, very much more a fan of The University of Michigan than I am a hater of their main rival Ohio State (Notre Dame, Michigan State etc.....)
Not true Susan, I am a fan of both the Cubs and White Sox (more of a Cub fan, but I still HATE the Packers!!!)

Both. I love the bears watch every game, hate the packers so much. Love the buckeyes, hate michigan.
