Surface area is calculated by the following formula:
4*pi*radius^2
using a TI83 calculator, and a diameter of 12,756 acquired from my source below, I come up with a surface area of:
drum rolll please . . .
511,185,932 km^2
Now heres the tricky part. The Earth is not a perfect sphere. So, check out the second link which breaks it down to the following:
Land : 148.847x10^6 km^2
Water : 361.254x10^6 km^2
But, if you add these two together, you get: 510,101,000 km^2
That's pretty close to what I came up with.

Well, do you want to know how many square feet or square miles of land covers the earth? Why would there be an average?
Oh, I get it volcanoes, earthquakes and tides make land appear and disappear. Duh, I feel stupid.
Hey, the next guy is expressing area in kilometers-- did you ask for kilometers?

Surface Area: Land area, about 148,847,000 sq km, or about 30% of total surface area; water area, about 361,254,000 sq km, or about 70% of total surface area.
Land area = 148.847x106 km2 = 57.470x106 sq mi.
Ocean area = 361.254x106 km2 = 139.480x106 sq mi.
The earth is not a perfect sphere but an oblate spheroid - so one cannot accurately calculate this surface area based on the diameter of the earth.

I'm trying to imagine how large that is and why it hasn't gone off in 2400 years. Do mushrooms last forever? Very interesting and no, I wasn't aware but I am off to google it right now as this tit-bit has improved my day greatly.
