i live in an older house, with some new wiring, but everything is 110...i had a bunch of new outlets installed this year, and for example, when you unplug the xmas tree, laptop, sometimes there is a spark arc....is there something wrong, do i need to get it checked?

It's the flow of electrons. And it means electricity was flowing, something was using the electricity when you yanked the plug. Not a big deal on small stuff which is why they don't put switches on certain things. But if it has an on/off switch it's better to turn it off before unplugging. My wife would always leave the vacuum on and just plug it up or unplug it to turn it on or off. Not a good thing, you'll arc the receptacle, the plug and possibly damage you equipment.Maybe even cause a fire if conditions are right.
Have a good one.
