Because those leftovers you left in the fridge too long have come to life and make sure it is shut off for you.
Actually it's called faith that the product you bought performs as expected. You can always mount an external toggle switch on the outside just to make sure. Sounds like a fun "man" project to me.

OK, you're bored or high. But I'll answer you. On the side of the door there is a little button. That button is pushed in when the door closes. Press it. Did the light go off? If yes than you know when the door is closed the light goes off, if not then you now know it stays on. But be very careful! That button may also be your self destruct button!!!

There's a small button/lever on the inside of the door or fridge where the door connects. When the door connects with this button, the light goes out.
Yes, I tried to figure this out when I was about 5 and well, there's your answer but I suspect you already knew the answer.

Thats right. Its a clever ploy - when you shut the door the extra light goes on, the music goes on and the sausages dance with the milk bottles! ;-)

Some things we have to take on trust. Besides, if the light shines and no one sees it, is it really shining?
But it is a clever marketing ploy...

Make a hole with drill machine on the door of your fridge. Peep from the hole if the light really goes out when the door is closed.

there's a button inside your fridge. when you press it, the light goes off. when you close your fridge door, the door presses on it, so therefore, you can be sure the light is off. search for the button, you'll find it.
