To impress someone, to hide who we really are, to keep from getting in trouble, or from boredom. You pick.

We all lie at times it seems to be one of those hard to tame human traits, so whether this question is you wondering why you lie or you've been hurt the following will shed insight if you try it! Once you get in touch with who you really are there is no drive to lie, people lie for reasons they have suppressed, and forgotten....it is a habit, it starts with getting attention or approval in childhood and becomes a way of life. It is hard work to make a habit of love and openness....a daily meditation to get there...an honor of self and Self. you are on the right track by asking....don't be to hard on yourself or others. People lie to hide who they are or to"not hurt others" (which I have seen as another way to protect oneself from conflict) Ask yourself why you lie.....then resolve to be as honest as you can....make it a goal for one day and study the thoughts it inspires. You are beautiful!

Lying is essentially an act of selfishness.

It is a type of fraud.

For when we tell someone something, he expects it to be a relating of what truly *is* (or at least what we believe it to be).

Lying always involves a betrayal of trust because in knowing that he is expecting the truth, we tell him the contrary to that to get something out of him.

In breaking the bread of truth with someone, that denotes that we are saying that we are that person's friend and that he deserves the truth and we want what is good for him. But if we lead him to believe that and simply say what will extract something we want out of him, that is a very malicious evil.

Lying and fraud are perhaps the worst evils that there are.

I don't think that there is an easy answer to your question, because i believe that we are all guilty of telling or not telling the truth at times. Most of the time we do it to hide something that may hurt another person or ourself. While every one knows that the truth is best, we are all guilty of not being complety truthfull at times.

To avoid hurting others feelings; get out of a tight fix or use it to exaggerate our importance and build self esteem.
(Not a good idea to do so on a resume. That will eventually jump up and bite you.)

I believe that we lie because we get scared. We get scared of consequences of a miss-deed , scared of hurting someone's feelings, scared of what others might think of us, but ultimately it stems from us being scared.

It is an essential defense mechanism. If you couldn't lie, you couldn't conceal embarassing, insulting or potentially damaging thoughts.

why not?
Sometimes a lie is better than a truth.
And as Christmas arrived see this example:
Why do you tell your children Santa Claus exists?

Sooooo many different reasons, from pathological liars to "little white lies" (to spare someones' feelings). It's almost impossible not to in that case!
