I am going to stain the outside of a house the wood siding on the house has little football looking figures in it where they must have patched spots at the factory. I just need to find some way to make it match the rest of the wood as I stain the exterior. Some of the football patterns dont match the wood color will it stain the same??

Well most people love wood because of it's natural beauty. With time, wood changes color. If the areas are darker. . . than the "footballs" will probably appear darker. If they are lighter, than you know to give it a double dose. I would play with an area that might not be as noticiable or get a spare piece to use as a sample until you get the hang of it. They have stain that doesn't show the grain. . . it will sort of look like paint. . . they have wood colors. . . maybe you could try that.

It appears that you have paint grade not stain grade siding. However, if you still want to stain, here is what you need to do. Apply the stain of your choice according to manufacturers specs, let it dry for a sufficient length of time, then cover with a clear sealer of you choice (Varnish, Laquer, or shellac). Once the sealer is dry to the touch get out a small paint brush and several colors of stain close to the color that you desire and paint the stain onto the spots that you need to match to blend them into the surrounding areas. After that stain has dried, apply several coats of Marine spar varnish, It is a good idea when you go to purchase the spar varnish that you buy it from a store at a marina, you will get far higher quality than if you buy from a big-box store like Lowe's or Home Depot. If you decide that you are going to paint, apply primer according to manufacturers instructions, sand any areas where you can still see the patch outlines and reapply another coat of primer to those areas, Apply your desired paint.

the football shapes are natural wood markings... even if they are a different color, (knots or marks in wood are usually darker) the wood still looks great...thus the word natural. Personally, I like the natural look... I would stain it all the same color and enjoy.

Be Blessed!
