Use a fractional exponent. Square root means ^(1/2), cube root means ^(1/3) etc. To understand why this is, consider the laws of exponents. Since (a^b)^c = a^(bc), sqrt (a^2) = |a| = |a^1|, it follows that we define fractional exponents a^(1/n) = nth root of a.
