They probably would have named something else is they hadn't been Spanish ships, staffed by Spanish sailors. Columbus himself was an Italian. So I think it's safe to say that if he had gotten financing from Milan or Venice, they would have been different ships altogether.

In the UK there used to be an advertising logan 'Drink Pinta Milka Day', issued by the Milk Marketing Board, so I guess they named the second ship.

Had Spain not paid, Columbus probably would have never made that fateful voyage in the first place.

I suggest that if Columbus sailed under the Italian flag, they would have carried Italian Names.

Well, if they had not been Spanish ships...they certainly wouldn't have had Spanish names.
