It feels like crap. A bunch of us aboriginal students (we're completing our teaching degree at Brandon University) went to a bar for karaoke night. A few of us had drinks, but most did not. There were non-Native guys trying to start fights with the guys in our group... my best friend got called a 'dirty squaw'. I am very light skinned (I'm Metis).

When I went to the washroom, this little dyed blonde, tanning bed (orange faced) woman (complete with frosted lipstick and clothes suitable for someone 20 her junior) says to me (slurring): "What are you doin' hanging out with those f*cking Indians?" I leaned over her and said... "I am a f*cking Indian. Back off!" She did.

I hate some ****, somewhere, has to introduce an element of hatred into a simple gathering. We all try hard not to react, but it can be a struggle.

I guess it depends. Carlos Mencia is making fun of all of our culture and races in such a way that it makes us laugh and relax. Others do so with malice and it can be demoralizing - but I find that if I keep in mind that those who ridicule my culture, beliefs, religion, race are looking from the outside in and don't really understand who or what I am or about, it is easier to laugh it off as the silly rantings of the uninformed.

I also am seeing more and more that those folks who would ridicule others as a dying breed. The world is changing and so are humans - those who can not embrace the concept of unity, tolerance and respect will be left behind.

Peace!

I agree with Carole, and I add that when someone like Carlos Mencia makes fun of a race, he is actually making fun of racial stereotypes and stereotyping! I think it's great. His audience is filled with people from all different races and cultures who have come together to laugh. And they all laugh at his jokes, whether it's pointed at their race or another, and nobody gets offended. If they do, than that's an issue that is inside of them.
I am bi-racial and I don't usually get offended at jokes that stereotype races. I do get offended at rude and ignorant remarks made by truly predjudice people. But, more than being angry about it, it just makes me feel sorry for that person because they are so ignorant and unenlightened.

It is hurtful when it is mean-spirited. Many negative stereotypes of a group of people come from a few loud, nasty people, who tend to make everyone else look bad.

It feels awful, but then I think that a person that judges you by your race or skin color is a complete ignorant.

when its mean spirited, it hurts. cuz thats who u r and where u come from. its disrespectful. when ppl talk bout how puerto rico is worthless & shouldn't b a pert of the US & that all ppl do is drugs & kill, it hurt my feelings cuz yea its part of PR but its not all of it. and ppl do the same thing here. but when Carlos Mencia makes fun of hispanics, its funny cuz hes Mexican & wat he says is true but funny cuz he can do that cuz hes also a hispanic. it deepends on the feelings behind wat ppl say. i don't care anymore cuz im proud of where i come from and who i am & if ppl have a problem wit it they can kiss my behind! im puertorican & proud!
