actually, the sock monster lives in the cat dimension (also the place cats reside when you can't find them.)
There are numerous portals to this dimension within a typical household, including a small one in the washer.
The sock monster eats the socks via these portals, and then excretes the reamis under the bathmat.
And yes, I've thought about this more than any mentally stable person should.

My husbands socks, my kids socks, and my socks, all have this problem. It seems that they can be sucked out of the washing machine during the spin cycle. When the water that has washed or rinsed the clothing exits the machine and our homes it often takes socks or any small items of clothing with it. Strange...but true! Try pinning them together or putting them in a pillow case that you tie at the end. It does wonders!!

I think a lot of mine fall down behind the bed. I fold washing on the bed. But I can't look under the bed as it is contaminated. So any socks that fall down there stay down there - could it be something similar?
The website below is pretty funny - worth a look!

I had a similar problem and then I discovered a few shredded socks laid between the rubber seal and the metal drum.
