I was wondering if UK stores such as ASDA or Somerfield would accept them as payment for goods?

i think most accept

Don't know about Somerfield but i think Asda no longer accept cheques

Cheques becoming old hat,soon all will refuse them
they slow down ques .and to easy for crooks to use.

Most places are phasing out cheques but most TESCO and Sainsburys still do
