I mean when am using yahoo messenger and the other person does not have a yahoo ID but an ID on gmail, luxmail, etc

Their messenger client has to be able to handle the protocol you're using, and vice versa. Checkout Gaim, it's an Open Source multi-protocol messenger client.

Using Yahoo and Microsoft newest Instant Messaging programs, you may chat on with people on those two programs.

There are servers out there that will relay messages between instant messaging programs, but I don't know how secure or well used they are.

I use Gmail.... or do you mean, use Yahoo messenger to talk to them?
