In other words, does it cut off commercial time to resume to real time?

it uses a second tuner, like stacking 2 recievers on top of each other. after you rewind it operates like a dvd player.

Some DVRs record all the time you are in "live" TV (using 30 min buffer); others start recording as soon as you hit rewind.
While you replay content, the DVR continues recording. It does not cut any commercials and it does not need to. You can never watch in the future. You can only watch between the beginning of the recording buffer and live TV.

The how is that it is always recording whenever you are on a channel. You are wtaching a show and not recording it and pause it it will continue to record until you turn to another channel.

As for the commercials, if you pause it for 15-20 minutes it will allow you to watch it and speed through the commercials. You can not however break the time barrier and speed through when you start out live.

I like to record shows and watch them later or let them get started for 15-20 minutes.
