Friday morning around 11:30, a 3.9 quake shook the area. It was a scary reminder of the 1983 earthquake that destroyed buildings and left several people hurt. There are no reports of injuries or damage in today's earthquakes.

Coalinga police say they continue to do what they can to be prepared in case another big earthquake hits the city. Coalinga fire officials also parked their engines outside to protect them in case an after shock damages the building.

A minor earthquake with a magnitude of 3.9 rumbled near Coalinga on Friday morning.

The temblor erupted just before 11:22 a.m., according to the California Integrated Seismic Network. It was located about four miles from Coalinga.

Coalinga police Sgt. Chris Simons was in the department's records area when the quake struck. He described it as a "real quick jolt."

The department received calls from the public after the quake, but Simons said there were no reports of damage or injuries. "We got real lucky," he said. "It's kind of tough on the dispatchers, but they get through."

Another light earthquake was reported at 10:15 p.m. near Coalinga on Friday night.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the 4.3-magnitude quake struck about four miles east and northeast of Coalinga and 11 miles west of Huron. Police officials in both communities said they had no immediate reports of damage.
