I used to play stratocasters, but got tired of the single-coil sound. Right now I am shopping around myself, and seem to prefer the Gibson series. Most of them have fatter double-humbuckers for helping generate that thick, distorted sound easier without overdriving the amp or pedal too much.
But you have the right idea, it's mostly a matter of comfort because one practices for hours at a time.
The best place is a large guitar/music store that lets you pick up and try their guitars on a wide range of amplifiers and effects in the store, so you can find what you really want. Over here in California there's a place called Guitar Center that does just that.
Happy Hunting.

Line 6 Variax without a doubt ... a total guitar package all on its own ... including Fender, Gibson, Gretsch, Martin, Rickenbacker, etc. (Over 40 guitar models at the flick or twist of a switch!).
Bought myself one last Xmas, fantastic sound very comfortable and extremely versatile. Married it to a Line 6 Spider amp just last week, and the range of sounds is phenomenal ... Metal, Folk, Rock, Country, Futuristic, ... in fact, over 400 (Yes 400!) preset sounds in the amps memory banks!
Both items bought on line from http://www.gak.co.uk - Guitar cost £460 and the amp cost £245.
Check out the Line 6 website and take a tour ... http://www.line6.com
Happy hunting.

Xaviere guitars are a little known company, that build a solid great sounding very playable guitar. go to guitarfetish.com to take a look at them.
my friend in portland has an endorsement from them and says they are great. go to myspace.com/lovelyrocks to check out his guitars and some clips of how they sound.
By the way, John replaced a 1972 les paul custom with these guitars.

Have you looked at the various venders websites, Fender, Gibson, Yamaha, etc. etc. They will always have info on each of their guitars and brief sysopsis of what kind of music it works with.

i would say either fenders or gibsons, they are the best guitars...i have a fender and it's excellent....
the good thing about fenders is that they're good and cheap, but gibsons are even better but more expensive...
i would recommend either a fender stratocaster or a gibson les paul, or a gibson SG.
good luck
