Every year I see the arriving freshmen at U of Oregon. They come in Daddy's full-size van just stuffed to the top with more crap tied on the roof. For heaven's sake, have they seen a dorm room?!
I like amybabe29's answer. I'd add computer and printer. (Make sure it has an ethernet port, and if it's a laptop, it should also be able to do wifi.)
Bring clothes, a dictionary, personal items and maybe a bicycle with a good lock. Everybody seems to like the mini-fridge and microwave, but you'll have a meal ticket at the dorm cafeteria and unless the school is in outer Mongolia, it'll be surrounded by fast food places. I can't see cooking in a dorm room, but it's your call.
iPods (or some similar mp3 player) are very useful and some colleges even require them. I'd definitely have one. If you play a musical instrument, bring that too (unless it's a piano!)
Oh, yeah, bring money, preferably a debit card. You might also bring a phone card; you'll get homesick the first quarter, and the card is good for calling Mom and Dad without making them pay for collect calls. Everybody seems to have a cellphone now, so if you have one of these already, bring it. I wouldn't buy one just for college though. Everything else is either available on campus or nearby, because townies all know that students are customers!
Things you do NOT need: A car. Motorcycle. Television. (Dorms all have them and they almost force you to waste way too much time; you're there to study.) Leave the thundering stereo at home, too; if you just have to blast your ears, use your iPod.

flip-flops for the shower
minimal dishes to use to cook stuff in your microwave
get a little plastic crate that can drain to put all the stuff you need for the shower....then you only have to make one trip to the bathroom each morning
bathrobe(to wear before and after showering, because it is easier to dry off and change in your room)
snacks for late night studying
