Yes, I own my own business, and what I say goes, because it is my business, I sign the paychecks. If you don't like my rules, then leave. I can always hire somebody else.

No, and for two reasons.

1) In this country, we have freedom of speech. So long as it is not treasonous or seditious, and so long as it is not an outright threat against another's person/life or slanderous, we have the right to say whatever we wish. Retail stores should not have the right to dictate this. Whether one wishes to say "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays" should by THEIR choice.

2) The MAJORITY of people in this country have no problem with the words "Merry Christmas," when they are said in sincerity by another individual. It is only a small group, most noteably atheists, who are offended by these words. Are we so afraid of offending the minority we are willing to offend the majority? Are we living in a time of tyranny of the minority?

My mother works in retail. Last Christmas, her employers forbade their employees from saying "Merry Christmas" as they were afraid of offending those who do not celebrate it. My mother did not obey, and apparently neither did others because this Holiday Season, the store repealed the policy.

In short... No matter what you do or say, you're going to offend someone. Some are offended by the words "Merry Christmas", and some, like me, are offended when we are told that we may not say "Merry Christmas."

This is one reason Political Correctness is such a crock...

I think that is a major violation of the First Amendment right to freedom of speech. I think America is too wrapped up in political correctness. Remember the Christmas trees at the Seattle airport that had to be taken down because of a protesting rabbi? You cannot make everyone happy. We need not forget the true meaning of Christmas, which is first and foremost a celebration of the birth of Christ. Second, it is a time of renewal and family.
Happy Holidays could mean Happy Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Passover, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, come on the list goes on and on. Say Merry Christmas because that is what the holiday is.

Yes they can. The owner sets the policy. However, if the consumers don't like the policy, they will boycott. Walmart lost a lot of business when they went politically correct and banned the saying of Merry Christmas. So as a result they changed their policy.
BTW, if some people are that easily "offended" by a greeting of Merry Christmas, they need to get a life.

Yes you are employed by the store, and the store can make any such policy it chooses. You have the right to leave if you don't like the way they run their business, but you must as an employee obey any reasonable request, or face dismissal. In most states, they don't even have to give you a reason why they are firing you.

A bit pathetic Schmorgen....I am not religious at all, but love Christmas. I am into the Santa, lights, decorations and such. Whatever people choose to believe is fine with me (remember freedom of speech, religion, etc). You need to lighten up and smile...you may even get to enjoy someone smiling and saying Merry Christmas....so...have a Happy Holiday!!!!!

yes, i am against saying happy holidays, because this is a christian nation. I also think the store has a right to decide, we should not FORCE a store to say merry christmas.

No I don't think they should. However, I don't think they should have the ability to stop them from saying anything they like as regarding to their religion, and the people that feel like Christmas is under attack would flip out if stores started adopting a policy that let their employees also say Happy Kwanza, or Happy Haunukah. (or however that is spelled)

If they are in fact on the clock and working, yes. They are a representation of that particular store. What's the difference in saying Merry Christmas and Happy F**king Holidays. If they ask you not to say it, don't say it.

I would have more of a problem with a company forcing me to "celebrate" anything or forcing me to say "merry Christmas"...

no they should not be aloud to tell their employees what they can and cannot say,i think its terrible that in America we cant all say merry Christmas to people,just because we may offend them,my sisters school cant even have a Christmas party,its crazy.
