Believe it or not, check if there is a small variety store in your area. It is like an old fashioned five and dime store. I found a HUGE bear one year for my Daughter in one,I had looked EVERYWHERE or so I thought, and there it was right in the FRONT window display EXACTLY what I was looking for. As you said those other stores were way too expensive and this HUGE bear(which am sure is like the dog you are looking for) was only$10!!!!

Try a thrift store...like Salvation Army or Goodwill. They usually have tons of stuffed animals--- many of them brand new with tags still on. All well under $20--- even the biggest ones usually under $10.
Plus, you're supporting a good cause.
Re-sale or consignment stores often have really good things for cheap too... and often look totally new.

K-mart, or, if you go to Macy's, for $15 you can get a good size stuffed animal snoopy and it comes with alittle radio. That is their stuffed animal this year.

try http://www.freecycle.org

it is a list of groups all over the USA who give away extra stuff they have, you can ask on there, I'm sure there are people who have those carnival animals they won and stuck in a closet.
