Was the vehicle backfiring BEFORE you did the new plugs, cap, and wires? If it WASN'T, then I'm guessing someone put the wrong wire on the wrong plug, the distributor cap is improperly installed, or somehow the engine timing has gotten messed up. Check the wires and cap to make sure everything's as it should be...you can go to Autozone or a similar place and find out how the wires are supposed to be installed, and which wire goes where. Otherwise, take it to a mechanic to have them check the timing, and inspect the fuel delivery system as well. Hope this info helps.

The engine might back-fire and shut off on load if its spark timing is too much advanced. The distributor should have a screw to advance the engine timing, try retarding it a bit.

the plug wires are not on the correct plugs, you see the plugs are in a firing order and if the plug fires at the wrong time then it will not run and will backfire. you have to find out which plug wires go to what plug.

Well since you smell gas when it is running, I would say that you have a either a fuel leak some where, or a clogged fuel filter that uis backing everything up. I would lean more towards a fuel leak.

it's possible that you are ready to throw a rod in your engine. wouldn't hurt to get the transmission checked either. it can be difficult to pinpoint an exact problem from a discription. cars are funny like that
