Usually bad brake light switch or fuse for the same. If brake lights don't work then the shifter interlock will not release.

The brake pedal is connected to a switch that requires you to press down on the brake pedal before you can shift the transmission out of Park. This "interlock" switch, evidently, is bad or the cable to it has become disconnected somehow. A bad or shorted switch would explain blowing fuses. After checking to see if the cable's loose or broken, go to your local Autozone or similar place, describe the problem, and they should be able to print out the location of the switch so that you can check it (free), and sell you a replacement, as well as print out install directions. Otherwise you'll need to tow the van to a mechanic or dealer. Hope this info helped.

ok likely undesirable Alt. that overheating scent may be the battery so be careful the can blow up if overcharged or shorted. in the adventure that your boyfriend has any electric powered ex. get a meter and verify voltage after starting off the motor vehicle. if it shows over about 14 volts like somebody else stated its the voltage regulator contained in the alt. if it is the issue then it has likely already smoked the batt. also your shifting difficulty will be brought about by technique of low voltage happening your shift solinoids( no longer sufficient modern to tug them in) sturdy success!!

Depending on the year, the interlock cable may be broken. It requires the brake to be depressed to unlock the shifter. If it is an older van, the linkage to the transmission may be bent, broken or disconnected.
