I like simple bands as thumb rings on women and have worn them. I think it is a cool look and might symbolize independence.

This must be quite recent. The only thing I can find on thumb rings is that they were popular with the gentry in the 17th century. The ring was topped with a circular or oblong box in which snuff was placed for "snorting and sneezing" as needed.
