I want to put an old piece of wood inside the tank to add a little hiding place for the turtles because now they only have plants to hinde in! Is it ok to put a peice of wood from my garden in the tank if I soak it in water for a while first? Also, should I bleach the wood to get rid of bacteria that could have developed in the back garden?

Plain, clean wood in an otherwise good tank (spacious, well-filtered) is not usually a problem as long as you replace it if it rots. Also, scrape off any soft or spongy parts- only use solid wood.

Try baking the wood in a few hundred degree oven for a couple of hours to heat it and dry it well. That will kill most of the germs, etc. better than bleach would.

Clean driftwood is a better option, however.

Be careful with the plants, some plants are extreamly toxic to turtles. Never use plastic plants, they will try to eat them and it will get caught in thier intestines. About the wood, you can bleach it, but make sure you rinse it very well, some are extreamly sensitive to it.
