This must be a good Catholic boy. He wants to practice the rhythm method of birth control Of course it never worked well for any of the good catholics that followed the pope's advice.
Birth Control Methods that reasonably work:
1. No sperm within 50 miles of the egg (OK, that is better than reasonably good).
2. Some form of birth control medication from a doctor.
3. combination of condom, diaphragm, and spermicidal jelly (BTW, spermicidal jelly is not edible and can cause allergic rash on the face).
everything else is kinda iffy at best. probably half the teen pregnancies were caused by "You can't get pregnant:
If it's your first time to have sex
If you don't have pubic hair
If you pull the penis out before you ejaculate
If you ejaculate near the labia even if you didn't put it in
If you only have sex during those elusive infertile times
I'm assuming you're from the US and this is just another reason schools teaching only abstinence is a mistake.

Yes... you CAN get pregnant before you have your first period. Your period is your body flushing out a blood lining and an unfertilized egg. If you have sex right before the first time you ovulate (release an egg) you can get pregnant. Dr's attempt to pinpoint your date of conception by counting 10 days past the START of your last period...IF you are very regular, and that can be hard to predict when you first start having your period

There is a method of birth control called "natural family planning" that incorporates a woman paying attention to both her menstrual cycle AND her cervical mucus. She can monitor her temperature too, but that is not as reliable. All these things are used to measure when a woman has, or more importantly, is about to OVULATE. A woman can only get pregnant +/- 24 hours around her ovulation.
Problem is, a woman's menstrual cycle -- especially if she is young -- is very irregular so it is hard to use natural family planning in a reliable way. There are courses available to learn natural family planning, but they are usually offered in Catholic churches, and if you are not married I am not sure how they would feel about you attending them. Sometimes hospitals or naturopathic facilities offer these courses too. It takes several months of classes and daily monitoring her cycle and cervical mucus for a woman to truly understand and be able to predict her cycle and when she is about to ovulate. But even then, this method is one of the most unreliable of all the contraceptive options.

all depends on when your ovulating, that could be anytime of the month.
and you CAN get pregnant before you ever get your first period.
"Here's how it works: A woman can become pregnant when she ovulates for the first time — when her ovaries begin to release eggs. Ovulation usually occurs about 14 days before a woman's period begins. So it's possible that a woman may ovulate and get pregnant before she gets her first period. Once a woman begins to ovulate, pregnancy can happen when ejaculate or pre-ejaculate gets in the vagina or on the vulva."
