Movie Review: NEW YORK Is Brilliant STARRING John Abraham, Katrina Kaif, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Irfaan Khan and others. DIRECTION Kabir Khan STORY The plot of the film revolves around three friends Sameer (John Abraham), Maya (Katrina Kaif) and Omar (Neil Nitin Mukesh), who are students at New York State University. Sameer is the most popular student on the campus. He is handsome, athletic and bright in studies. On the other hand, Maya is an Indian who was born and brought up in the New York, which is also considered as the centre of the world. The third character of Omar (Neil) belongs to middle class Indian parents and has come for the first time to the USA for his higher studies at the University. Omar is a simple guy, who became very impressed with the life and freedom of the people in the US. He starts loving the country and its culture. However, all of sudden something happens, which changes the world view of these three friends forever. Now, Roshan (Irfaan Khan) enters the scene who is an undercover FBI agent and responsible for unleashing a number of events that lead to much disheartening in the life of three friends. PERFORMANCE John Abraham, who plays the character of Sam, has given the best performance of his career. In the second half of the film, when John recounts the horrors he had undergone, his performance is par excellence. In the climax sequences John Abraham is just superb. He is able to convey his pain to the viewer through his powerful portrayal in the film. His performance clearly shows that John has moved on from ‘Dostana’s butt showing stud to a superb ‘actor’ John with this film. If the second half of the ‘New York’ belongs to John Abraham, it is Neil Nitin Mukesh who holds the attention of viewers in the first half. In his character of a middle class student Omar, who has gone to the US for the first time to study, Neil shows a range of histrionics. The viewer will certainly forgive him for ‘Aa Dekhein Zara’ debacle after this portrayal. Katrina Kaif, who has been generally used by the filmmaker to raise the glamour quotient of the films, is seen in a completely different avatar in this film. The beautiful girl has shown that she has the superb acting prowess and needs to be utilized properly. Her character of Maya has the backing of writers and she comes out with flying colors. She is fabulous in her performance and will surprise one and all with her portrayal. Irfaan Khan, who plays the character of Agent Roshan of FBI in the film, is in top form and successfully provides the film with a stimulus that it needed to become a superb movie for all of its main protagonists. The direction of Kabir Khan is first rate. He has handled the sensitive subject of terrorism after 9/11 in a very mature way and depicted the plight of civilians on the suspicion of being a terrorist vividly through this film. However, it would not have been made possible if he was not supported by a team of very good writers. The screenplay of the film revolves around a real incident after 9/11 and writers have successfully made it into a thought provoking tale. Such films hardly have any place for song numbers. But the director has used a few whenever it is required. The cinematography of the film is brilliant. VERDICT Though made on a sensitive subject, John Abraham’s performance lifts the film several notches from run- of –the- mill flicks. It’s a brilliantly executed film from Yashraj stable. The film has superb chances at the multiplexes of big cities.
