Chic is right. The worst thing about any democratic system (government or otherwise) is that the majority is not necessarily correct.
Democracy by definition means "rule by majority." The American government is NOT a democracy. The only thing legally democractic about the American system is the way we vote. Period.
Our system of government is (supposed to be) a Constitutionally-dictated REPUBLIC which means "rule by law." However, in reality what we have is an oligarchy, meaning "rule by an elite few" which desperately needs to be destroyed and returned to what the Founding Fathers intended.
Don't take my word for it. Go back and read the Constitution. REALLY read it and then compare that to what's going on today and maybe you'll realize just how much freedom we've allowed them to steal. WAKE UP, AMERICANS!

Democracy as any system has its flaws. The key ones are:
1) It is dependent on acceptance of the people to submit to the "will of the majority".
2) We vote for people that have been "pre-selected" for us bgy the parties according to interests other than our well being. "You can paint the house any color you want; do you want green or yellow?"
3) It is not objective, elections are decided by advertising party loyalty and a few polarizing issues; not by job performance.

Democracy means government is run by the people. But in democracies like the U.S's, they have to elect a representative every 2 years and senators every 6 years. The people are rarely asked to solve a specific problem. Those are referendums or things you see on your ballot every once in awhile, like "would you like to ban same-sex marriages in the constitution?", or "Would you like to let the local school system have $285,000 extra in spending for..."
On top of that, they also don't let us pick the President directly. The electoral college picks the President. Sure, they always go with what the people say, but what if our country became divided between government and its citizens, and we tried to elect a radical politician that wanted to change everything? Would they let us?
It's not "really" any better

The main disadvantage (at least in the U.S.) is that a very low % of the able population votes. What is worst is that a very high % of those that vote do so without a clear understanding of the issues, the majority vote because tradition.

The main disadvantage of democracy is that it doesn't exist. Recent proof of this is the abandonment of the criminal investigation into the Saudi fighter plane contract bribes. The government wanted to foregt about it, so they forgot about it. How can they do that? Because they can, that's why. Democracy - your having a laugh!

Provided people know what they are doing when they cast a vote the advantages should outweight the disadvantages. My greatest fear is that a misguided majority could easily vote for a dictatorship and lose their right to vote. In other words democracy contains the seed of its own destruction. It is up to us to be vigilant.

The most obvious disadvantage involves the two party system like we have now. When one party controls the presidency and one controls the senate and/or house neither party can necessarily push forth their agenda and we get a bureaucratic log jamb.
