The Unions have taken the competitive abilities out of major American producers. The unrealistic wages and unnecessary positions at the plants have put too much burden on the companies. Just as the big steel companies were murdered by the unions the auto makers are heading down the same path. The Japanese and foreign car makers that have opened plants in this country have avoided the pitfalls of fat union contracts. Over the years I have seen more and more companies fail because of demands of labor that were too great. The result is taxpayers end up picking up the tabs for failed programs. Think about how many people will end up with menial jobs when the big companies are no longer around. America has lost its manufacturing position because of greed and soon there will be nothing to support the economy. Service economies do not advance society. Idle work forces mean more poverty.

Ford does have a history of treating it's employees well. The money is more than likley to help cover severances and retraining for displaced employees. That's the only thing that I can see at the moment because it's a deductable cost and therefore a wash after year-end accounting.
