My first thought was The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams.

When I did a search, it did turn up a line from a monologue in the play: "I reach for a cigarette, I cross the street, I run into the movies or a bar, I buy a drink, I speak to the nearest stranger--anything that can blow your candles out!"

There was a TV version in the 1960s, according to IMDB. It was 1966, and starred Shirley Booth, Pat Hingle, Hal Holbrook and Barbara Loden. There have been several other versions, including 1950 with Kirk Douglas and 1987 with John Malkovich.
