I have a red ear slider turtle somewhere at home. He's been missing for two days and I've searched everywhere for him. I've placed a little dish of water near where I last saw him so I'm hoping that he will come for the water when he's thirsty. I'm really worried about him because he needs to be in at all times and it's been two days already. My dad says turtles can sense where water is but I'm in doubt because my turtle is grow in captivity and I'm afraid he might be incapable of finding water.

It does not NEED to live in water- water just offers them security and helps them eat, mate, etc.

Try this. Get down on the floor on your belly and look for little dark hiding spaces- under furniture, in piles of newspapers or clothes, etc.

Start close to the tank and work your way out slowly. Every time you check a place, try to clean it up- move piles (and check them carefully- REALLY carefully- first), block up ways to get under furniture, etc.

It probably has not gone far- but it will also usually hide in the smallest space it can fit into so be very careful and check everything!

It CAN sense water- but big chunks of water like rivers or lakes, not small bowls or puddles. Also- most food baits won't work well- air does not carry the smell of the food well to the turtle.

(FYI: baby and young Red-ear and related turtles DO NOT eat veggies anyway!)

Red eared sliders are very very hardy. It should still be fine.
The best places to check are the dark corners.
Other than that there's not much that u can do, coz terrapins like those dun really get lured by food or anything.
So just leave the water there, hope it comes, and search all the dark corners. Hope it turns up! I once lost mine for a week, and after that it just walked out of a corner, and it was fine so dun worry alright!

I found mine two days later in a newspaper! Its eyes were closed and it didnt look good! I put its foot in the water and left its body on the basking area! As soon as it sensed the water it jumped straight in and since that day it has been ok with me because in the beggining it was really scared of me, guess it new I saved its life!

I have several turtles do but I do not let them run around the house...place some fresh carrots and other veggies in several areas of your house. If he is real small check the areas under the fridge and stove since they do like heat. Good Luck!

Turtles arent that smart they probably wont come back unless it tis acuinedince. We lost our turtle in our house for about 5 days. One day he just was walking around and we picked him up. You'll have to wait it out. Look in short places under cabnets or something. we found one of our turtles there.Hope u find em.

red ear sliders are water turtles, there is no way you should allow this poor thing to roam your house. it needs to be kept in an aquarium, filled with at least 5 inches of water or more, with rocks or gravel breaching the water so it has room to bask. your turtle is probably dead if it's been out of water for two days. i suggest talking to the employees about owning a pet before buying one next time
