My wife had a sonogram done thursday because she is supposed to be eleven weeks along according to her lmp. Well the sonogram said she is only six weeks 4 days and they could not find a heart beat. Could the dates be off and she really is only 6 weeks four days? And is that too soon sometimes to hear or see a heart beat yet? Has anyone else experienced anything similiar? Her cycles are incredibly irregular...could that cause her to be 5 weeks off on the dates?

Women can skip a period and ovulate again and get pregnant later than they thought. This happens a lot. your LMP is only a guide, not a difinitive date. Thats what the sonogram is for.

Her pregnancy is measured from 6 weeks LPM right now, not 11. And NOT the fetal age of 6 weeks, thats two weeks younger than medical sites talk about. Thats why this quote has two ages.

Here is a quote from a medical website:

Week 8 & 9 - Gestational Age (Fetal Age 6-7 weeks)

By this point in the pregnancy, everything that is present in an adult human is present in the developing embryo. The embryo has reached the end of the embryonic stage and now enters the fetal stage. A strong fetal heartbeat should be detectable by ultrasound, with a heartbeat of 140-170 bpm by the 9th week. If a strong heartbeat is not detected at this point, another ultrasound scan may be done to verify the viability of the fetus. **

There is a moment in the development of the embryo where the heart jumps to life, this happens between 5-7 weeks, some times as late as 8. So long as an embryo measures at a certain length without a heartbeat before 8 weeks, its still considered viable, and another ultrasound will be ordered in a week or so to check on its development.

At this point you have nothing to worry about unless your doctor has indicated that he's not okay with the development.

It it possible her dates are off. There is also a possibility that the baby is small. Talk to her doc. For my last two children we weren't sure when they were concieved, but the ultrasound and the doc helped us determine teh conception and due dates. SO go with teh ultra sound. Typically the heart beat can't be heard through an external ultra sound until 8+weeks. Don't worry, you'll just stress her out if she isn't already.

yes the reason she is way out is because of her irregular cycle, and 6 weeks is to early for a heartbeat, and believe it or not i am not an idiot
