We put it in the stand last Sunday and it hardly "drank" anything! The needles are falling off.

Personally, I have felt that this cutting the bottom couple inches off before installing the tree stand is all a myth anyway.
Sure, the water disappears, (your home has dry heat which causes normal evaporation) into the air.
Most Christmas trees are cut in October to be able to get them all to the marketplace by Thanksgiving. We all know that once you sever a plant of any kind from its original growth place it is dead. I absolutely cannot believe a tree that has been cut for over a month can draw moisture from a pan like it originally did from the roots since its been cut off from its main life source.
Make sense? I still think all the hype is to pacify the purchasing public.
Next year see if you can purchase a tree from a local grower where you can select it while its still growing, and get a true freshly cut one. Then it will take a lot longer for it to dry out, and maybe , just maybe, it will absorb some of that water out of the tree pan into the tree itself since it was "freshly" cut, not "dead" for over a month. Hope this helps. Sorry about your dry tree.

Did you give your tree a 1/2 inch fresh cut before putting it in the base? If not that might be why its not taking water. I know thats not the answer you were probably looking for.

other than removing the tree completely from its base you might try and drill a few holes at a 45 degree angle all the way thru the base of its trunk so the water has a fresh avenue to travel, i doubt this will work though. sorry.

As the others have told you, you have to cut a fresh cut when you bring your tree home and get it in water in less than 30 minutes or it will seal itself off again. You can try to drill holes in the side but you'll probably have to take the tree out of the stand to drill the holes low enough to get the water so you might as well get out your saw and make a clean cut. It might not help at this point but it's worth a try.

You should have cut at least with a 1/2 inch off the trunk. Try shaving the bark around it. Since you just bought it yesterday I would say take it back with your recite unless you got it cheap. They also sell food that you give the tree that helps it stay alive longer. Try getting some of that stuff.
