web hosting just means any computer or server that has software based webserver capabilities.
you can download your own free software suite from www.softpedia.com or direct from the publisher at netserver.hugosoft.com
get a free dynamic domain name from www.dyndns.com also get the dyndns updater, link on dyndns.com
set up the server suite install the dyndns updater with your domain name in it.
you then need to configure the httpd.conf file as required to add each domain to the webserver so that when a web browser/ user enters a domain name the server supplies the right page.

information on how to set up the webserver is contained within help files in the program.

as for a server. i would strongly recomend you have a system running at least two dual core CPUs 8GB minimum RAM hardrives at 500GB each if you are planning to host as a service. and if you are going to host professionally you are going to need a static or standard domain name available at around $9 a year.

typically a basic server can be set up for as little as around £2905 hardware if you budget for replacing the hardware every three years. so you need to bring in £1000 a year to break even without adding your overheads such as electric and internet connection charges which would eqaute to around £2 a day plus building rent (although you can just set up the server from your home).
