A framed family photo is a great idea.

Also, the socks, pyjama etc thing is also good. How about some gourmet foods (teas, biscuits - my Mum's Christmas gift this year includes a packet of "Duchy Originals" Lemon biscuits!)

Good luck.

Since this is such a tender age in an older person's life, I would like to suggest finding a service that cater's to older people. My suggestions would be a maid service once a week that can help out on cleaning or shopping. Another service is one that makes meals for the week in the home and takes care of purchasing necessary grocery items in the kitchen. If your grandfather does not drive, an open taxi cab tab would also help out. If you would like to choose a gift remember that things that are useful, such as a new telephone with an extra large number pad for dialing and an extra loud ringer, are always good gifts. Hope this info is helpful and Happy Holidays to a fellow sincere gift giver.

Gifts from the heart is what is best for older people who don't need or want much. A cool scrapbook of pictures is always a safebet. If you are not all that crafty but have digital photos you can create an account at Snapfish.com and create either a soft bound or hardback "Memory" book for under $20.

The best gift you could give him would be a whole day of just the two of you together. Enjoy a nice home cooked meal together, maybe play some cards. Go thru the family photo albums together and label the ones he remembers for future generations. Engage him in a conversation of what it was like when he was your age. An man in his 80's doesn't need much, but attention from a loved one means the world.

Hi! Does your grandpa have any health concerns? Does he live alone? You may want to purchase him a lifeline system! Also check out the AARP website or any caregiver's websites, they'll have good suggestions, like adaptable equipment to make life easier for elderly, ie grabber's, products for people with low vision...ie big print playing cards...another great great thing is to get a big picture book with pictures of social/cultural events, items, from his heyday in the 1940s-50s. It will be fun for him because the pictures will bring up memories and stories he can share with you. Another cool thing, is you will learn a lot about him and your family when he starts to share the memories. What he'll really enjoy the most, is the time you spend together. :)

A great present would be to have Christmas family get-together in honour of your grandad- a bit like 'This is Your Life'.
If it would be possible, you could even invite old friends that your grandfather hasn't seen in ages to make it even more like the old TV show! It would make him feel really special.

Does he drink? Read? What are his interests? I bought my Grandad (who is of the same age) a small book of quotations related to old age, wisdom and being a grandfather. It was only a small gift but he seemed to appreciate it compared to the usual chocolates that everyone buys him.

How about some nice aftershave cream or something along those lines? You can get the fancy stuff, which won't really cost that much, between $10-20. That way you don't have to worry that he won't like the type of sock or tie or shirt, which he might have a lot of. Good luck.

I would put together a photo album made of love for him.
Old pictures, new pictures, notes and comments...
It would be something for him to look at and Cherish. It would mean alot to have lots of family occasion photos and him with his parents, your parents and so on.
I really think this could be a work of love and art...
I know he will love it.
If his eyesight is not good, get him a magnifying glass to go with it.

A framed picture of all his family together, with a card saying "I love you grandad. Happy Birthday."
