A. A nova isnt a star. It is actually a process more like it. A normal nova, not a super nova (I think thats what you mean) Is mearly a whitedwarf absorbing material from a larger red giant...So it is not really a star. White dwarfs are kinda stars but they are considered to be dead. So Id exclude them. Red giants and the sun...a yellow dwarf...thats really easy. Just because we cant see the sun at night, doesnt mean its not bright. In terms of distance away you can see it, for instance, a star like beetlejuice will be more visible probibly for its size. But the sun, a yellow dwarf, is brighter if I recall correctly. So Im going with B. Sun.

Let's look at the absolute magnitudes of these stars. A lower number is brighter. A nova peaks at -8.8. The sun is +4.83. A white dwarf is +11 to +16. Red giant is around -1.0. The lowest value is the nova's absolute magnitude, which means it has the highest luminosity.

Nova is the brightest. However, a nova isn't a star. It's the explosion as a result of too much material accumulating on a white dwarf in a binary system.

This sounds like homework, but I'll see if I can help you understand what's being asked.

A. A nova is not a star--it is an event that happens to white dwarves. A nova outburst is associated with close binary systems. These are stars that are so close to each other that they spill material onto each other. See the link below for more on that.

B. the Sun. The sun has a brightness (Luminosity) of 3.827×1026 W.

C. White Dwarves are the burned out cores of stars, composed of degenerate matter. They are very small, and since they have less surface area to emit ratiation, they are many times less bright than the sun--even though they are still white hot!

D. I think you see this coming now--Red giant stars are much bigger than the sun. Betelguese is so big that it would fill most of the solar system! With more area to emit light radiation, the red giant is many times brighter than the sun, despite glowing a relatively cool reddish color.

PS, even though a nova is not a star, it is a VERY bright phenomena. While a red giant is typically 10,000 times brighter than the sun, but a nova outburst can be ten times brighter than that, (not all are) a whopping 100,000 times brighter than the sun!

don't take my word for it though. These are interesting astronomy topics, and you can learn more at the sites below.

Some say Sun and others say Nova but if you clearly look at the question its not asking which star is brighter to us on Earth its asking which star is brighter in general. So coming to that conclusion it would be A.

The sun is the brightest to us on Earth, B. But if you're talking about brightest in general, it's a nova.

yeah, curiously so. he watered down our military to make his pharmaceutical-corporation-finding sort without freaking words, as though we are illiterate. the yankee flag has stars, not a increasing solar. in the past his supporters held up posters with in simple terms a picture on him, like Chairman Mao banners. yet what can the guy do? an "OBAMA" examine in capital letters would properly be graffiti'd to assert some thing else extremely quickly with a sharpie. EDIT: look at each and all the solutions to your question from a great variety of those human beings pretending to be individuals---humorous how they actually like the Senator's disdain for American symbolism. in keeping with danger the Senator could get a huge bite of money to purchase a huge place for all of them to "flow on" : they might all bask interior the rays of the "O" poster in a delusion of benevolent dictatorship!
