I guess when they said to do crunches was to work your abdominal muscles which help with back pain. Always strenghthen the core and you can help with back problems. make sure to stretch your back muscles, it helps to prevent those muscle spasms, unless you have some sort of injury, but even then stretching is recommended.
heres a site you can view some of those stretches.
Good luck and good health ^i^

Strengthening your ab's will definitely help your back pain. The abdominal muscles ALSO support the back. I would not use the machine right off maybe just crunches on the floor for a week then move to the machine.
Also yoga helps to strengthen your "core" muscles, which will help your back tremendously.
Walking is always a good idea as it promotes total health.

Skip the chiropractor and get a deep tissue healing therapeutic massage. Show your masseuse in which you are in agony and he/she is going to pay attention to that field. I individually do not believe the backbone was once intended to be popped out and in of position and can certainly not cross to a chiropractor. Just my opinion however it is an option. Good good fortune! =)

Your walking most likely had hip displacement which was causing the lower back to strain...

i have problems with my back...but its because my hamstrings are tight and not very flexible. my hamstrings are so tight that they are pullin my pelvis down which is changing the curvature of my spine. so i have to stretch alot to help that out. just a thought that that might be causing the problem for you too.
and of course sit-ups/any ab work-out will be helpful too.
