There is an advantage to hooking a router between your PC and the cable modem.
it's a hardware firewall
not all routers have wireless... it didn't come around til a couple o years ago.
what you need is.
a wireless router. get the router not just the access point. then your main PC can stay wired... up to four usually.
Then you need a wireless card or dongle [USB?] in all the other devices. set it up to use wep. wireless encription protocal so your neighbor can't steal your bandwidth.
NOTE: this is also called WiFi or 802.11 [a, b, g, etc]
IMNHSO Netgear makes the best WiFi gear. I got my current stuff on eBay. Linksys was the co. that released there "G" before it was stable and that's why I hate them.... Wasted hundreds on their gear which never worked!!!

You can get routers from anywhere. All you need to use wireless is a either a wireless dongle or wireless pci card for the PC. Or for a laptop a wireless dongle or wirless card. Unless it is built in. You can buy normal routers anywhere. But iw ould buy a wireless router and disable the wireless just incase you want to use the wireless at a later date. Anymore questions? Hit me on my email.

Where you from? Check if there's a clearwire internet service provider in your area. Go to www.clearwire.net to check. That way you don't have to buy any wireless router, clearwire is a wireless modem that you can take any city in State that have clearwire satellite. Their internet is fast also like broadband cable. At least with clearwire you don't have to share bandwidth with your neighborhood because you have your own signal with wireless. Clearwire is very handy if you have laptop. If you have clearwire you don't have to subscribe from hot spot, you get coverage of wireless internet in any place. Now, if you want to connect 2 or more computer with your clearwire modem you will need wireless router for the computers.

A on the spot modem router will be a on the spot router/modem mix and a on the spot router would basically be a router with the help of itself. in case you had severe-p.c. cable information superhighway you'll choose a modem linked to a on the spot router to get on line.
