i have a 86 ford f15o with a 352W and the battery keeps going dead, unless i unplug the alternator.

Sounds like the diode in the rectifier has gone bad. This is a cheap repair if you can find an Alternator rebuild shop. Ask around at some automotive electrical shops and you may find one. If not replace the alternator.

I would suspect a few other things first but from an electrical perspective it is a completely plausible failure. A shorted diode in the voltage regulator is all it would take.

If you have a battery charger with a meter try this: With the charger hooked up and working, unplug the alternator. If the voltage on the charge meter drops significantly remove the alternator and have it tested. Tell them the symptoms and ask them to pay close attention for a possible high resistance short. Most auto part chain stores like Kragan will do it free.

Good luck. This is not an insurmountable problem. It's a pain in the posterior but a fixable pain...

Alternator does not run the battery dead.A bad battery will drain overnight.

yes u'll have internal regulator sticking
