I am reminded of the story of the Tower of Babel in the Bible. A great society thrived, united by a common spirit. Together they built a nation that rose high above the others. From the top of that culture, an arrow was shot that struck the heart of the spirit that bound the people together. Once that spirit was dead, the people no longer understood one another, and the nation crumbled.
The spirit that binds America is written in our constitution. Many Americans see that spirit threatened by the current leadership. As a result, we no longer seem to speak as one nation. Will this be the end of America? Or, will the spirit of liberty and freedom rise above the din?

Wow. It's like I have read a completely different version of the Tower of Babel. My understanding is that the people believed they were gods, and in the act of building the tower, denied the deity of God.

I have always seen this as the beginnings of secular humanism.

Otherwise, I think you have picked a great analogy. And I think secular humanism is once again the culprit.

The spirit you mention always is threatenened. Short term memory allows one to point at W and the current leadership but another could have thought was that it was threatened by the previous leadership. Some others probably thought is was threatened by the one before that and the one before that and so on and so forth. The end of America will only happen when Americans stop governing themselves.

No. Complacency of it's people cause it's downfall.

That's why this forum is important. If it is used correctly, as a
platform for debate and not just a place where people insult
each other or ask stupid questions.

And by the way, you got the story wrong. Reread it.

MERRY CHRISTMAS and have a nice day.

Thank you very much, while you're up!!

Exactly!

As I have answered some questions in the past in by pointing out that great societies rise and fall, and that those who do not learn from history are doomed to re-live it, you have captured the essence of my thoughts.

Any great society created from a common ideal always fades when that ideal is lost.

Yes.

History has proved the more secure a society feels the less secure it becomes, as others try to take that security away.
