as soon as your baby is able to sit up and control it's head with out support, and he/she is able to move food around in the mouth. try baby cereal first if your baby can handle that well, then you can start introducing jared foods. Some baby's can start as early as 3 months. I think Docs prefer to wait til 4 months.

Baby's need to be introduced to basic cereals first - rice, oatmeal and barley when they are at least 4 months old. It takes about 2 - 3 months before the baby is used to the cereal before adding jar food.
With the cereal you start out giving it to them really runny, about 1 - 2 tsp at a time. As the baby gets used to it you increase the consistency of the cereal. By the time you get the cereal mixed to oatmeal consisity, your baby will be ready for jar foods. Start with beginner labels. peas, carrots, sweet potatoes - always start with veggies - the sweet ones first. the after all the beginner veggies are introduced, then start the fruit. If there is a veggie that you don't like, at least give it to your baby so they can make their own opinion if they like or dislike. The more you can introduce to them now the better it is for them in the long run.
Also, peanuts, peanut butter, other types of nuts and honey needs to given after the baby is over 1 year old, due to allergic reaction, and with the honey, sometimes mild strains of botulism are present and the baby's immune system won't be able to handle it until the 1 year mark!

Baby cereal mixed with formula can be started around 2-3 months if baby is demanding frequent feedings.
Jar foods should not be necessary until 6 months. Introduce one food at a time in case allergy or intolerance symptoms occur.
Begin with fruits then progress to vegetables and finally meats at about 9 or 10 months.

Well, every baby is different, as is every parent. My baby is now 6 months old and is on stage 2 baby food. I started her on cereals when she was 3 months and kept moving up the stages until she was 5 months and then I started her on stage one veggies. When she was about 5 and a half months I put her on stage one fruits along with veggies.....Now, I am starting her on stage 2 which is the meat and veggies and fruits for dessert. You have to watch when you are buying baby foods, they have "desserts" which are very high in sugar. But depending on you and your baby, you can start him or her when (s)he is ready, they say between 4-6 months.
You should start with the veggies and don't give fruit until they eat the veggies well. The fruit is sweeter and they may not want to eat the veggies if they have the fruit first.

usually you can start to mix fruity jar food into cereal between the fourth and fifth month. Generally its closer to the fifth. From there you get to try all sorts of little jars of foods, its a taste fest over the next month or so.
Be sure to have a camera handy.

6 months is the recommended age, until then milk is all they need. babyled weaning is something you may want to investigate, and jar foods are really unneccesary , expensive and not the best, chopped/mashed home made food is really better.
