The two primary reasons are:
1) Volume is up, each passing year sees an increase in the total amount of SPAM that's in circulation, so even if the percentage stays the same, you'll see more.
2) Spammers are actively updating their delivery methods and testing new ways to get their messages past SPAM filters.
Disposable e-mail addresses may be the way of the future, sadly...

you're lucky.. I have to empty my e-mail inbox at least once a day or it gets full.. I get a 5mb inbox and it's only cos I use my e-mail for business that i haven't changed it. I get aroubd 500 - 600 spam e-mails a day, My blocked list is also full so I can't add addresses to it. I set up a automated response so anyone who spams me gets spammed back. I also forwarded all the emails to the "contact me" on the offenders web pages. took a lot of time to do this but I got rid of one compnay who was sending me 70 - 100 e-mails an hour!

Stooping spam is a continual game of catch up.
You block one way and they find another to get by .
You block it and they find another.
The current trend is using images to beat the filters
I use one yahoo mail account for registering software and anytime I have to give out an email address to someone who is not a personal friend
I have my other account from my isp as my main account
I don't subscribe to anything where I don't know the company is legitimate
NEVER reply or "unsubscribe" from unsolicitied email . That just tells them they have found a real address and they will sell your address to other spammers and you will get inundated.
Use special characters(#!-_/ etc) in your email address. This stops a lot of spam
Keep your anti-virus software updated

Yes SPAM mail is on the increasing and it is expected to get
worse next year. Better be prepared for the invaders. The answer
above mentions that he uses a Mac, well so do I and find myself
doing a cleanup everyday. Never had any through Yahoo, which
I think will calm you. My PC is an Apple iMac 10.4.8 (Tiger) and
SPAM (or any other) invaders do me any harm, but I cleanup
since I don‘t want to be a potential carrier in any outgoing mail.

I use a yahoo email address. I use it to store mail etc in. I never use it for anything else. Despite that I have to dump on average 30 to 50 spam mails every day and the number is increasing. I am convinced that Yahoo sells blocks of mail addresses. I have asked them about this but they deny it. If you find an answer I would love to know.

If you receive a spam email with an un-subscribe option do not use it. Once you have used the un-subscribe option they know that it is a legitimate email address.
One thing that a lot of people are not aware of is that if you have your own web pages or web site you should NEVER put your Email address on it in plain text format. Always encrypt it because running on the net are crawler programs looking for Email addresses, just for the purpose of obtaining them so that they can be used for Spam advertising. If your Email address is encoded they cannot find them.
Freeware programs are obtainable to encode them.
Search for Email Encryption

Simple, spammers quickly learn how to avoid being filtered and it takes time for the filter designers to write new ones for the systems. It seems to go in cycles. The people who write the filter codes catch up with the spammers avoidence techniques and the amout of spam you recieve drops. Then the spammers figure their way around the new filters and so on and so on.

I've never had any ...and I mean not one... I use yahoo and msn...I am on a mac (osx)...not sure if that makes a difference. I don't subscribe to anything I'm not sure about. I clean all temp internet files daily and generally keep the comp up to date with the needed downloads etc. Check your settings and report anything you don't want as junk. Don't accept any offers from 3rd party clients or open any mails you don't know who they are from or what they are.

So long as you give your email out, you will always have spam -- AOL isn't the only company that gives them out to advertisers.
