Because pregnancy is @#*! exhausting.
I'm throughly surprised at the extent of the fatigue. Add on that it can be hard to sleep, and, well, there you go.

"Fatigue
Most women are more tired than usual during pregnancy, especially during early and late pregnancy. At these times, your body is producing new hormones and making a lot of changes to prepare for the hard work ahead.
Causes of Fatigue During Pregnancy
During early pregnancy, your body makes more of a hormone called progesterone. This can make you feel sluggish and sleepy. In addition, your body produces more blood to carry nutrients to the baby. This causes more work for your heart and other organs. Your body also changes the way it processes foods and nutrients. All of this change is stressful for your body and may lead to fatigue."
It goes on to mention late-pregnancy fatigue -- and, yeah, I can't see how carrying all that wouldn't be exhausting.
Note that the tiredness is reputed to increase with age. I'm _almost_ envious of the teen-agers on here over that.
I'm almost hoping you were kidding. Does pregnancy actually look or sound _easy_? Pregnancy is not a disease, but it is in many ways much more taxing than a 9-month bout of the flu. I've been weak as a proverbial kitten here and there. And fine here and there, but, mostly -- tired.
All that said, I am not crippled, and I suspect severe fatigue is pretty rare. You'd want her to check with a doctor if you heard complaints of that nature. But, tiredness? Quite a reasonable complaint. (Along with a laundry list of others.) There're reasons people do things for pregnant women; that sort of politeness is not a recent invention. Not having known until recently, I'm glad that my mother hammered in the 'be polite to pregnant women; always give up your seat, etc' lesson. Yeah, women have been doing this for ages, quite natural, etc. Also quite natural to slow down when it happens.

Because most women feel extreme tiredness due to the enormous metabolic changes taking place and the demands this places on their systems. If the woman feels sick and has difficulty eating this can compound the problem. Many women actually feel more tired during the early weeks that at the end of pregnancy.

Are you serious? I was a like a zombie. I'm on my third pregnancy. The first three months are hell. I was sick all the time and wanted to sleep all the time. In fact, the first pregnancy I had a feeling I might be pregnant because I went shopping with a friend and was so exhausted like I've never been before. It just wasn't normal.
I found the following at a website that might explain for you why this happens:
"Your body has a lot of work to do. During the first weeks of pregnancy, your body begins to produce more blood to carry nutrients to the fetus. Your heart multiplies its efforts to accommodate this increased blood flow, and your pulse quickens by as much as 10 to 15 beats per minute. Your body changes the way it uses water, protein, carbohydrate and fat. The combination of these profound changes translates into the fatigue you feel."

I think with both of my pregnancies I was the most tired in the first trimester, it takes a few for your body to adjust to being pregnant with the hormones doubling every 72 hours can overwhelm the body. The good news is that usually goes away around the same time of morning sickness.

the first 3 months of pregnancy the baby is feeding directly through the mothers body, leading to tiredness and low energy levels.after three months the baby feeds from the placenta.
the mother is also more likely to loose weight the first 3 months of pregnancy. the first 3 months of pregnancy are more critical due to this

Some woman find out they are pregnant because of alot vomiting in the morning and because they start feeling the are real weak. This only happens after the month pregnant and for about only a month. This may sound cruel, but I was pregnant twice. If a woman is complaining that they are still not feeling well or that they are extremely tired longer than this, they either need to see their Doctor or their just wanting sympathy.

there bodies are going through a lot of changes and the 'new baby' is taking a lot of vitamins etc to boost its growth in the first trimester. this causes tiredness and the change in hormone levels can cause sickness.

That's very common. The body is going through massive changes and the person may not have been in tiptop shape to begin with. Any pregnant woman needs to listen to her own body, not compare herself to some statistical average.
