bid when there are 30 seconds left on the item as this is about the latest possible time as your bid has to be processed. and bid at least a few pounds higher than the current bidder as other people will also be bidding at the last minute, although never bid more than you'd be willing to pay

I agree with what incongru said about it not making any difference when you bid to a certain extent. If you put in the max amount your willing to pay, then its going to be the same as putting it in 20 seconds before it finishes most of the time.
The only way this would work, is if other people didn't look at the auction or forgot to check back until the end, in which case you would get it cheaper than you migth have done.
However, I don't agree that there are NO bargains on eBay, what about the multitude of sellers that incorrectly list their items, and/or neglect to put on a reserve? I know people who solely look for incorrectly listed items, and get some real bargains from it!
Everyone does the bid at the last second thing on eBay, it's no insider secret, and you will only win if you want it so much your willing to pay more than what anyone else will pay. Simple as.
John S- Good point about the bidding odd amounts, but....
This only really works if you're the only one doing it. And I doubt that is the case. One person bids .01 pence, what is to stop the last person bidding .02, 0.3 etc etc... This doesn't really give you an "edge" It just means that now things sell for odd amounts on eBay.

What I do is, I put up 2 bidding pages, I forgot how I do it, but you can ask that questions next, it's been awhile sense I've been on ebay, any ways you have 2 pages up and the reason you do that is, you wan to watch the time and the bidding at the same time, the item your bidding you want to put in the highest bid and go ahead and type it in the space, then you click in bid, while watching on the other page the time, you keep refreshing it so you can see the time when it says 5 sec, you click on the other page confirm bid. Whala, you usually get the bid, but again not all the time because the person under you may have a higher bidding price. good luck.

Theres no point in bidding until the very end, all you do is inflate the price. Work out how much you want to pay, avoid round numbers as everyone will be bidding round numbers and you can get an edge by bidding a bit higher eg 41 instead of 40. Then bid 30 seconds before it closes.

Only a mug would bid in the last sixty seconds or so. As a seller, I'm glad to tell you that there are PLENTY of mugs.
What you have to do, is decide how much you are willing to pay. Decide what the item is worth TO YOU and stick to it. Put your bid in, and Ebay will send you an email telling you if you have won..
All this nonsense about bidding in the last few seconds. People seem to think it is some sort of computer game- whereas in reality it's just the biggest flea market in the world.
There are NO bargains on Ebay. And I have lost count of the number of times I have seen items going for much more than they are actually worth.

I think it's a psychological game.
As a seller, i'm happy there are people who try to outbid eachother.
But as a buyer, I don't understand why people don't just bid their maximum price at the last 15 seconds instead of putting multiple bids and increasing the price even more. Sometimes the bid goes above other sellers' Buy It Now price.

Use bidnip, they will put the bid in for you, costs $5 for 20 sucessful bids, they put the bid in at the time before the end that you say, can be as low as 3 seconds.

The best advice for bidding on e-bay is watch the clock and don't bid until the last 10 or 20 seconds of the sale that way no one has the chance to out bid you.good luck.

Only ever bid in the last hour. You know the near finishing price then and unless someone really wants it their bidding is over.
