Why the names of shells in the atomic discription are not starts from A,B C...?

The reason is because they were named on their respective orbital probabilities and were named as s,p,d,f,g....

s = Sharp
p = Principle
d = diffused etc

I researched the reason for using s,p,d and f. They are historical letters used originally by physicists studying spectral lines, but why those letters and who started them is unanswerable.
