If it's deemed intentional by the referee, it wouldn't count as a rebound rather a turnover.
A couple of years ago, Atlanta Hawks guard Bob Sura (now with the Houston Rockets) needed one one rebound to secure a third consecutive triple-double. Sura was all alone for a breakaway lay-up in the dying seconds of the game and intentionally missed the basket in order to get the rebound for the triple-double.
Initially, it was counted as a triple-double, but after much debate, the league office rescinded the rebound. A similar incident also occurred with guard/forward Ricky Davis when he threw the basketball to the opponents backboard just to get his "cheap" triple-double. The NBA took that one away as well.
Situations such as yours are handled on a "case-to-case basis" by the officials. I guess they gave you the board.
Hope this helps.

No - A rebound may be caught by yourself. That is NOT a foul.
However, if you missed the backboard, net and ring completely then it would be a pass to yourself and a foul.

As long as it hits the backboard or rim you are fine. If you just throw it up and catch it, it is a pass to yourself.
