Oh, yeah, Dead Eye Dick Cheney is a reliable source. He and his boss are not vary credible these days, or was it forever. No I do not agree, it is Rummy's policy that is failing in Iraq. His decisions on how to conduct the war have been flawed from the very beginning. They marched on Baghdad and from mission accomplished until now it has been all down hill.

Its highly unlikely I ever could agree with anything Cheney says, but Rumsfeld did shake things up at the Pentagon. Its a question as to how good he was. The sad thing is how Iraq is forever
his legacy,

I'm not sure that our present culture of sniveling "give it to me now" children understand or deserve what Rummy was doing & faced with. The big problem with the much hated war is the moral curruption that dilutes the war into a welfare / altruist program - driven that way from the very top (Bush).

We'll be hard pressed to find Rumsfeld's equal in our meat-grinder culture.

I like Rumsfeld and Im sorry to see him go. He was a visionary for the armed forces. That being said, the best Sec Def of the 20th century was Robert Macnamara, or Casper Weinberger. Thier leadership and vision helped us win the Cold War, and the downfall of the Soviet Union

Well Ken... I know where you stand but I hope you can look beyond all of this political crap and give due consideration to what I am going to say. In a different time under different circumstances I would have said that Rumsfeld ranked right up there with the best. Unfortunately we are of this time and the circumstances we find ourselves in are almost beyond anyones control.

I do believe that Donald Rumsfeld is a man before his time.

His vision for what the US military should be was to draw down America's giant cold-war garrisons around the world and transform the U.S. military into a high-tech, "agile" force suited for expeditionary warfare around the globe. Rumsfeld actually achieved a good part of this vision. He elevated the role and size of Special Forces, turning them into a separate worldwide command. He gave Special Operations—the global SWAT teams of the 21st century—the lead in the war against terrorism. He changed the way the Army and Navy operate worldwide, making both services more nimble. Finally, Rumsfeld began a profound shift of America's basic military approach to threats abroad toward a new force organized to face unknowable contingencies.

That certainly should raise a man to a level much higher on the totem pole than what he has been attributed with due to the struggling war in Iraq.

A person can only do so much. There comes a time when the people who you are trying to liberate and give a better life to need to take responsibility for the liberation handed to them (which was) and try and help themselves. It is not Donald Rumsfeld fault that the people in Iraq haven't (to this point) wanted to build on that liberation and secure a better life for themselves.

What is the saying? "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink" sums it up I'd say.

I'm sorry to see Rumsfeld go.

Donald Rumsfeld was the best, yes. But he was no politician. He would never just tell people what he wanted to hear. He just wouldn't. He was a straight talker, no bullshitter kinda guy and the Dems couldn't stand that. Bush hated to see him go. It was HIS OWN choice to leave because of the elections.

He's the best $500bln could buy. Not much of an improvement by replacing him with an Aggie, though.

You can't ask that here because all you'll get is hack answers from bush haters or supporters. You need to look at our military and decide what their overall condition is. Are they well equipped and have good morale? Do they have any trouble getting people to enlist?
