the problem is that whenever driving , the car smells of petrol so much so that I have to open the windows.
This happens only on low speeds (<30 kmph) & not on higher speeds.
It gives an average of 8-9 kmpl (6-7 km with AC)in the city and 15-16 kmpl on highways.
I have consulted many mechanics but they could solve neither problem. Each one of them just cleans the carburretor but to no benefit. I ve got the float pin replaced. The mechanics say that the carburretor is NOT overflowing else there could have been starting problems. Timing & tuning are proper according to them. Please advise.

There is a system in your car called EVAP. This system takes gas fumes from the carb. and fuel tank and stores them in a charcoal canister. When the time is right (highway speeds) a valve opens (purge valve) and the fumes are burn in the engine.
When this system malfunctions it will suck raw gas into the canister soaking it with fuel. Since this is raw gas the engine can not re-burn it. Have a good mechanic check out the EVAP system to see if it is function correct.

The problem with the mechanics is that they and their environment smell of petrol, because they also for some strange reason use it as a cleaning solution. So they really cannot tell when there is a petrol smell in the cabin.

Since you have a pre-1998 carburetted M800 I would think that the problem with your engine is the fuel line. There would be a leak somewhere. At higher speeds the engine SUCKS with greater pressure so the chances of a leak between the accelerator pump and the carburettor are less.

One of the common culprits is the cheap rubber tube between the copper line and the engine/carburetor block.

Could be a stuck flaot. do this, start the car, let it run for about 5 mins with the hood up, then either shut the car off your self and run to the carb or have a friend shut it off and listen right at the carb for a sound like water runnung down a drain (that would be the excess gas flowing into the engine), if you here it, repalce the carb or get it rebuilt right.

I think it might be time to change the locks! "Yahoo Dullards: This is a question... not chatting... please note that this is asked in question format, in an open community, to all at YA!
