The TITANIC would have floated as only one or two compartments would have flooded she was designed to float with at least four flooded. However the pain would have come in that sudden stop as all that furniture went flying forward ouchy!!! Though that is far better than sinking it would have looked bad in the papers as load after load of passengers are helped off in casts and stretchers. It should also be noted that things like life boats and the smoke stacks would want to go forward and possibly go crashing along the deck.

A bow shot would be better, ships have to break "SOME" sort of ice in their life time, so the bow is re-in-forced, ships are strongest at the bow, and it would have been stronger THAN the sides. Don't forget that "METAL" gets STRONGER when it is crushed together or bent, so as the hull collapsed backwards toward the stern of the ship, it would become stronger. Look at any shipping accident, or collision between two large vessels, the ship that did the "Ramming" (bow) is usually the one that is left standing. The vessel that takes the "SIDE" shot usually sinks.

Most of the bulkheads on Titanic were not watertight but the first one from the bow going aft was. Assuming this bulkhead was not damaged by impact the vessel would float. In Titanic's case the damage was done on the starboard side where none of the bulkheads were watertight, thats why it sank.

popular scientific research suggests that a head on strike would not have caused the Titanic to sink.

Not sure if the water tight doors on the Titanic went across the ship or length ways, think they went across well, any way It would have sunk eventually cos of the bad design of those doors but more people would have been saved cos it would have gone down slower
