Flying from Sydney to Melbourne can be very expensive.
You can rent a reasonable car from some of the car rental places. (Budget, Avis etc. can be pricey, but sometimes they have a deal pending when you are traveling).
Driving from SYD to MEL is about the same distance as LA to SF. Also the view is rather nice.
Last time I traveled from Sydney to Melbourne I took the train (overnight). There is a day train and night train (Night train cheaper).
As for accommodation there are many youth type hostels in Melbourne (downtown) that are safe in OZ that you can stay in. I think by memory hotels (motels) are expensive.
Traveling around Melbourne is very easy (Train, Tram, Bus) You can buy an ALL DAY PASS (not sure of the name) for public transport.

Well, the earlier you book your seats on the flight, the better. Jet Star Airlines is the cheapest option to travel domestically. It's an amazing budget airline so make your booking fast. The only thing is it lands at Avalon Airport in Melbourne, not in Tullamarine, which is further from the city. However, there are cheap shuttle bus services to go from the Avalon Airport to the main city area and tickets can be purchased at the airport itself. Your total cost would still be cheaper than taking Virgin Blue or Qantas which lands at Tullamarine, unless of course you get an excellent deal.

As for accommodation, I obviously suggest you stay in the city area on Flinders Street, Swanston, Elizabeth, Queen or so on. I suggest Ramada Melbourne Hotel. It has the most amazing location and the tram stop is right across. It's right in the middle of the city on flinders street, where there are many restaurants, train station, Melbourne Federation Square, shopping etc. By tram, it's also just ten minutes from Crown Casino and Docklands. Oakford on Collins and Ibis Little Bourke Street are others amazing places. These recommended hotels are also very reasonably priced.

Check out www.excelloz.com for more information on hotels in Melbourne. Have a good trip.

Excellent travelling destination. I feel it is inevitable to hire a rental car for such long distance travelling. I would recommend you to hire a car from any reliable rental car dealers from Sydney who would provide you with a well maintained 5 star ANCAP safety rating fleet of cars, to choose from.
