Murphy's Oil Soap and water. Use a sponge and wipe downward only once, turn the sponge over and wipe downward only once. Wiping back and forth smears the soot and makes it difficult to get off.
Keep the sponge clean and change the water often.
Have your fireplace checked. You should not be getting smoke from a gas fireplace.

IF you have a semigloss of highgloss paint, I would use soap and water. IF you have wall paper, soap and water. IF you have flat paint, get one of the above AFTER you prime the wall so the soot doesn't bleed thru.

tri sodium( phosphate spelling)not awake yet,,, tsp buy at paint supply or lowes and the like follow label inst. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,then good paint may as well it's easy
